In Neolithic times, we believe, the ancient landscape of Britain was populated by a civilised and ordered society without all-governing rulers. When the conquering Roman army invaded thousands of years later they did not bring civilisation with them, as is popularly believed, there already existed a civilised way of life, with its own set of values and beliefs.

For thousands of years the Ancient Britons had lived in harmony with Nature. Mother Earth was at the centre of their culture. But even then, as today, everything was changing. The growing population gradually led to a less nomadic way of life. Agriculture took over from hunting and along with it seems to have come worship of the sun as the bringer of life. It was in these centuries of huge social upheaval that there appeared throughout the land sacred stone circles.
